A good basin mixer tap does more than look nice. It controls water flow and temperature every day, so the wrong choice can mean splashing, weak flow or a tap that doesn’t fit the basin. Use this guide to choose with confidence.
1. Match the tap to your basin
This is the most common mistake. The tap and basin need to work together:
- Basins with a tap hole (wall-hung or pedestal basins) take a standard deck-mounted basin mixer.
- Countertop (vessel) basins sit on top of the vanity, so they need a tall basin mixer or a wall-mounted mixer so the water reaches the middle of the bowl.
- Inset or under-counter basins usually take a standard mixer on the counter or a wall-mounted one.
Check the spout reach as well: the water should land near the centre of the basin, not at the edge.
2. Single-lever or separate handles?
Single-lever mixers control flow and temperature with one handle. They are easy to use, quick to clean and the most popular choice today. Two-handle designs suit some classic-style bathrooms but take more space.
3. Check your water pressure
Many Nigerian homes run on water from an overhead tank, which can mean low pressure on upper floors. If your pressure is low, ask us about mixers that perform well at lower pressure, or consider a booster pump. Good pressure also matters for even mixing of hot and cold water.
4. Wall-mounted mixers need planning
A wall-mounted basin mixer has a concealed body built into the wall, with only the spout and handle visible. It looks clean and frees up counter space, but the concealed part must be installed before tiling. Plan it with your plumber early.
5. Choose a finish that lasts
Chrome is classic, durable and easy to clean. Newer finishes like matte black or brushed tones make a statement but need gentle cleaning products. Whatever you pick, keep the same finish across your taps, shower and accessories for a consistent look.
6. Look inside, not just outside
Quality mixers use ceramic disc cartridges for smooth, drip-free operation, and an aerator on the spout to reduce splashing and save water. These parts make the difference between a tap that lasts years and one that starts dripping in months.
