In a warm, humid climate like Nigeria’s, pipe insulation is easy to overlook, but it has a real impact on energy costs, building damage and equipment life. Here is why it matters and where it makes the biggest difference.
1. It stops condensation and dripping
Cold pipes, such as chilled water and air-conditioning lines, are colder than the humid air around them. Moisture condenses on the pipe surface and drips, which leads to stained ceilings, damp walls, mould and damaged finishes. Closed-cell insulation keeps the pipe surface above the dew point, so condensation does not form.
2. It saves energy
Uninsulated hot water pipes lose heat on the way to the tap, and uninsulated cooling lines gain heat before they reach the room. Either way, your water heater or cooling system works harder and costs more to run. Insulation keeps the energy where you paid for it to go.
3. It protects pipes and equipment
Constant condensation can cause corrosion on pipes, fittings and supports. In plant rooms, where boilers, pumps, compressors, tanks and ducts sit close together, proper insulation protects valuable equipment and keeps the space safer to work in.
4. It reduces noise
Insulation also dampens the sound of water flow and mechanical equipment, which is useful in hotels, offices, hospitals and apartment buildings.
Where insulation matters most
- Air-conditioning and chilled water lines
- Hot water supply pipes
- Plant rooms and mechanical services areas
- Ducts, tanks and valves in commercial buildings
Getting it right
Insulation only works if it is the right type and thickness for the pipe size and temperature, and if joints are properly sealed. Gaps let moist air in, which defeats the purpose. Plan insulation with your mechanical engineer or contractor at the design stage.
