If you are planning plumbing for a new building or a major renovation, you will hear contractors talk about multilayer pipe systems. Geberit Mepla is one of the best known. Here is what it is and why it is worth considering.
What is Geberit Mepla?
Geberit Mepla is a supply pipe system made of multilayer pipe (plastic layers bonded to an aluminium core) joined with press fittings. It is used for drinking water and heating installations in homes, hotels, hospitals and commercial buildings.
Why multilayer pipe?
Multilayer pipe combines the best of metal and plastic:
- Corrosion resistant: no rust build-up inside the pipe, unlike galvanised steel, so water quality and flow stay consistent over time.
- Dimensionally stable: the aluminium layer helps the pipe hold its shape once bent, so runs stay neat.
- Flexible: the pipe can be bent to follow walls and floors, which means fewer fittings and fewer joints.
- Pressure resistant: suitable for pressurised hot and cold water supply.
Why press fittings?
Instead of threading, gluing or welding, Mepla fittings are pressed onto the pipe with a press tool. This is quick, clean and repeatable, which helps installers work faster and produce consistent joints. There is no open flame on site, which is an advantage in finished interiors.
Where it works best
- New builds and full renovations where the whole supply system is being replaced
- Hot and cold water distribution in apartments, hotels and offices
- Projects where long-term reliability matters more than the lowest upfront cost
Things to plan
Use pipes and fittings from the same system, and make sure your installer has the correct press tools and follows the manufacturer’s installation guidance. Mixing systems or using the wrong tools can compromise the joints.
